The Writing subtest is the most challenging and many candidates are seen to fail. It is vital to submit your writing samples to a seasoned IELTS mentor and have your writing style assessed for feedback on what you need to add or remove to measure up to IELTS test standards. The writing test is wholly profession specific with 5 minutes for reading and 40 minutes for writing. The Reading test Part A is an extremely fast test with only 5 minutes allotted to it. Your comprehension of what you read is tested and evaluated.
The Reading Test Part B and Part C are done together for 45 minutes. In part B, again your reading comprehension is tested but this time more in depth. For instance, you might have to explain via complete the sentence” style questions what you understood about a paragraph from an instructional manual of some hospital equipment. Part C presents you with a long body of text divided into distinct paragraphs. It can run into about 700 words. You are required to answer multiple choice questions which quite helpfully point you to which paragraph the question is referring to. You have two of these long text bodied questions to work through. You must find practice material to properly study for this kind of assessment. Next is the Listening section. Time is not an issue here. The general format in Part A, is to fill in the blanks in the case notes of a consultation dialogue between a medical professional (doctor, nurse, physio, etc) and patient. The answers will be from the verbal responses of the patient which you hear in your test audio clip of the consultation dialogue. There will be two such questions. In Listening Part B, the question paper looks very similar to Reading Part B. Except instead of Reading a short extract, you will be listening to a short extract. It could be a monologue or a dialogue. The question will reference some context that you just heard. You must be alert because six of these questions take place quite fast. Listening Part is probably the most challenging subtest. Again like Reading part C. This time you hear an audio. Again, maybe a speech, monologue or dialogue. This really quite hard for some people as you need to understand what is being said, in spite of distractions like misleading keywords. You get two questions like this. In The Speaking test, you have two 5 minute role plays. You should consider each an actual clinical situation with a patient rather than a test question. So that is the overview. Remember, 95 % of this test calls for English language skills – Grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation must be strong. Once you are thorough with the preparation of these subtests, do as many mock tests to familiarize yourself with the procedure and build confidence.
